Polyacrylamide's (PAM) Application in Water Treatment
Water treatment encompasses raw water, sewage, and industrial water. In raw water processing, PAM, paired with activated carbon, aids in the coagulation and clarification of suspended particles in residential drinking water. By replacing inorganic flocculants with organic polyacrylamide, water purification capacity can be enhanced by over 20%, even without revamping sedimentation tanks; in wastewater treatment, it enhances water recycling and serves as a sludge dewatering agent; and in industrial water treatment, it is an essential formulation reagent.
Main Functions of Polyacrylamide in Water Treatment:
(1) Reduce flocculant usage. When paired with other flocculants for equivalent water quality, PAM significantly reduces flocculant consumption;
(2) Improve water quality. In potable water and industrial wastewater treatments, PAM, when used with inorganic flocculants, noticeably improves water quality; (3) Enhance floc strength and settling velocity. The flocs formed by PAM are robust and settle well, thereby accelerating solid-liquid separation and aiding in sludge dewatering;
(4) Anticorrosion and scale prevention in recirculation cooling systems. PAM use significantly diminishes the need for inorganic flocculants, thus preventing inorganic material deposition on equipment surfaces and mitigating equipment corrosion and scaling.
